BIOGRAPHY & OVERVIEW

About Narsinh Mehta

Narsinh Mehta (c. 1414 – c. 1480) was a pioneering poet-saint of Gujarat, revered as the Adi Kavi (first poet) of Gujarati literature. Living in Junagadh, he composed hundreds of devotional and philosophical lyrics (Prabhatiya and Padas) celebrating empathy, humility, and the dignity of every human being.

His immortal bhajan Vaishnav Jan To Tene Kahiye Je Peed Parayi Jaane Re (‘Call them a true person of virtue who feels the pain of others’) became the moral anthem of Mahatma Gandhi’s life.
