Melina Mercouri (18 October 1920 – 6 March 1994) was a celebrated Greek artist, writer, politician, and cultural stateswoman. During the Greek military junta (1967–1974), her citizenship was revoked and she became an international voice for democracy and human freedom.
Following the restoration of democracy, she served as Greece’s Minister of Culture from 1981 to 1989 and again from 1993 to 1994, initiating the European Capital of Culture program and advocating tirelessly for the preservation of classical heritage.
